Period poverty is a significant issue affecting many girls and women in India. Due to a lack of education, poverty, and social taboos, menstruation is often not discussed openly. Ek Parivartan Foundation, an NGO in Laxmi Nagar, is working to distribute sanitary napkins and raise awareness about menstrual hygiene. Many girls and women do not have access to proper hygiene products and are forced to use unsafe materials like cloth, newspapers, or grass, which can cause health issues.
In Indian society, cultural norms often discourage open discussions about menstruation. As a result, many girls are unaware of proper hygiene practices, and even those who know may struggle to access the products they need. The stigma surrounding menstruation further prevents them from seeking help or talking about their needs.
According to reports from menstrual hygiene brands and organizations like UNESCO, the situation is dire. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the issue, with many girls abandoning sanitary napkins for less effective and unhygienic alternatives. This shift poses significant health risks. Moreover, the lack of menstrual hygiene education is a major factor in the high dropout rates among schoolgirls. It is estimated that over 80% of women in India do not have regular access to sanitary products.
The National Health Mission (NHM) is a flagship initiative by the Government of India aimed at improving healthcare access, especially for underserved populations. Launched in 2013, NHM focuses on reducing maternal and infant mortality, enhancing immunization coverage, and addressing communicable and non-communicable diseases. It integrates the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), striving to provide equitable, affordable, and quality healthcare services.
The lack of affordable sanitary pads is a critical issue affecting menstrual health in India. Despite progress, only 36% of women use sanitary pads, leaving millions reliant on unsafe alternatives like cloth or rags, which increase infection risks. A significant barrier is cost—while a pack of 8 pads averages ₹30-50, many women, especially in rural areas, cannot afford this. The government and NGOs have initiated programs to provide subsidized or free pads, yet accessibility and awareness remain challenges.
Free sanitary napkin schemes aim to address period poverty and improve menstrual hygiene among women and girls.
By providing free or affordable sanitary napkins, these initiatives reduce financial burdens, enhance menstrual hygiene practices, and empower women, especially in rural areas. This helps to reduce missed school days and improves overall health and well-being.
These schemes are often implemented by governments in collaboration with NGOs, distributing napkins through schools, health centers, or community-based organizations. While challenges like awareness and disposal remain, the positive impact of these schemes on women’s lives is undeniable.
